7 Prophetic Signs: The Urgent Birth Pains

7 prophetic signs birth pains

Turn on any news channel today, and the message is clear: our world is restless. Massive seismic events shake the foundation of the Earth. Extreme weather patterns unleash destructive floods and winds across continents, leaving unprecedented devastation in their wake. For many, these are just geologic or meteorological phenomena. But for those with eyes fixed on Scripture, these mounting crises speak a clear and profound message through the Creation.

A World Under Strain

We are watching a biblical context developing before us, and the prophetic signs are out there. The frequency and intensity of these natural disasters are not random; they are a direct signal, a celestial alarm clock confirming the times we are in. Our Saviour Himself, Jesus Christ, provided the key to understanding this volatile state of the planet. He gave us a powerful overview that can be thoroughly checked against every headline, giving us a sense of urgency.

This is not a message of fear, but a billboard that shows the way. It is time to look past the breaking news and recognise the seven powerful prophetic signs that these global tremors, storms and events are proclaiming about the hour of the Lord’s return.

Just keep one thing in mind: “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (Matthew 24:36)

Therefore, do not be alarmed, but remain prepared!

1. Jesus’ Metaphor: The Beginning of Birth Pains

The most essential biblical truth concerning the increase in earthquakes and severe weather comes directly from Jesus Christ during His Olivet Discourse. When His disciples asked for the sign of His coming and the end of the age, Christ listed specific events: wars, famines, and pestilences. But He grouped them all under a single image (Matthew 24:7-8):

“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

This metaphor of “birth pains” (ōdines in the Greek) is the critical key to interpreting our generation. A pregnant woman experiences contractions that increase in two specific ways:

  1. Intensity: They become stronger and more severe.
  2. Frequency: They occur closer and closer together.

For thousands of years, the world has always had earthquakes, famines, and wars. That is simply the nature of a fallen world. However, the prophetic sign is the pattern. We are not just seeing disasters; we are seeing the world’s pain points accelerate, intensify, and grow more globally interconnected. This rapid acceleration of natural chaos is Scripture’s clear signal that the moment of Christ’s return (the “birth”) is drawing near.

The creation is acting as a prophetic herald, reminding the Church that we are living in the final throes before the King arrives.

2. The Groan of Creation

The natural world’s instability is not just a consequence of prophecy; it is a manifestation of the curse brought about by the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. The Apostle Paul articulated this in his letter (Romans 8:22-23):

“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.”

When we see massive sections of the globe ripped apart by seismic shifts or overwhelmed by rising tides, we are witnessing the creation itself yearning for redemption. The earth is subject to a “bondage to corruption” (Romans 8:21), and the natural disasters trending in the news are loud echoes of this brokenness.

This reality shifts the narrative away from random bad luck to a hopeful certainty. The destructive power of a hurricane or the terrifying tremor of an earthquake confirms that the existing system is unstable and temporary. The groaning of creation is a testament that our hope lies not in better civil engineering or climate control, but in the arrival of the One who will redeem all things.

3. The Shaking Earth Demands Repentance

When tragedy strikes, the human mind often defaults to a false and judgmental conclusion: These people must have deserved it. Jesus preemptively and sternly addressed this mentality after a local disaster in His time, the collapse of the Tower of Shiloah, which killed eighteen people (Luke 13:4-5).

“Do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

This is perhaps the most significant pastoral application for modern Christians. Natural disasters are not primarily a tool of specific punishment; they are a universal wake-up call to the fragility of life and the certainty of eternity. The lesson is not that the victims were greater sinners, but that all people live on borrowed time in a world guaranteed to decay.

The tremors under the earth and the turbulence in the skies serve to dissolve our illusion of control. Every news report detailing mass loss of life, every graphic image of a family displaced, is a reminder for the global community to humble themselves before a sovereign God. The central message of natural disaster prophecy is not “the end is near”, but “repentance is urgent”.

4. A Judgment on the Unrepentant

While the early stages of the “birth pains” are a general call to repentance, the Bible reveals a point where natural devastation becomes a specific expression of divine judgment. The Book of Revelation details cataclysmic events where major natural systems are struck: a third of the earth’s vegetation is burned, a third of the sea turns to blood, and a star named Wormwood (Absinthe) pollutes a third of the fresh water sources (Revelation 8:11).

These terrifying scenarios point to a time when God’s patience will be applied as His righteous justice. The severity of these future plagues is compounded by one detail: even under the weight of such unparalleled destruction, mankind still refuses to repent (Revelation 9:20-21). The increasing intensity of modern natural disasters serves as a warning that a greater judgment awaits those who harden their hearts.

5. Preparing the Way for Global Unity

The chaos forged by global calamities also has a geopolitical consequence: it creates the conditions for a powerful global response. When a severe weather event or widespread famine strikes multiple continents simultaneously, the world instinctively looks for a unified power to manage the crisis. This prophetic sign speaks less of nature and more of mankind’s political tendency.

The Bible warns of a coming world system and a final leader who will step into the vacuum created by global rebellion and fear, offering temporary peace and stability in exchange for total authority. This leader’s rise is directly enabled by conditions that make a centralised and powerful global government seem not just desirable, but absolutely necessary for survival. The prophetic events of the Last Days leverage the fear of destruction to introduce the deception of a false peace.

6. The Testimony of the Witnesses

Amidst the terrifying global turmoil of the prophetic hour, there will be a clear human response commissioned by God. In Revelation, two witnesses are given supernatural power to prophesy for 1,260 days. Their ministry includes the authority to call down fire, shut up the sky so that it does not rain, and turn waters to blood (Revelation 11:3-6).

This unique empowerment confirms that God’s people are not passive observers of the destruction. Even when the world is gripped by the most severe seismic events and water crises, the Gospel will be powerfully preached, backed by undeniable divine signs that mimic the final plagues of judgment. The existence and power of these witnesses serve as the final warning and a testament that the time for choosing sides has run out.

7. Faith Over Fear

The Christian’s posture during this increase of “birth pains” should be one of peace, purpose, and preparation.

First, we are called to stand firm in faith (Luke 21:19). The prophecy is terrifying to the world, causing “men’s hearts failing them for fear” (Luke 21:26). However, for the believer, these signs are not reasons to panic, but reasons to look up, because our redemption is drawing near. The destruction we see reminds us that our true dwelling is not on this groaning earth but in the Father’s eternal house.

Second, we are called to Gospel action. In the face of unprecedented devastation, the world desperately needs hope that is anchored beyond this current life. When disaster strikes, the Church is the hand of Christ, mobilised to provide aid, comfort, and the hope of the Gospel. We are called to love our neighbours in the wreckage, not just to point out the prophetic fulfilment.

Finally, we are called to live intentionally. Since all things in the creation are destined to be dissolved, what kind of people ought we to be?

I like the analogy of the chair. A chair is less real than the spiritual realm. “How come?”, one might ask. The answer is simple: the chair appeared at some point in time and will eventually disappear. The spiritual realm, on the other hand, is eternal; it has always been there and will always be.

Our response to a world shaken by seismic events and massive storms is to ground our family lives, our priorities, and our resources in that which cannot be shaken: the Word of God.

The creation is screaming its anxiety with birth pains. The earth is trembling with prophetic fulfilment. The time is short. Let us not be spectators of prophecy, but witnesses of the King whose return is signalled by the forces of nature.

Whether He comes before, during, or after the prophesied Tribulation times, our hope is in the One who can save us and give us eternal life in His presence.
